fellows come together regularly throughout the fellowship year and beyond for skills-building workshops and retreats. Staff in each of our placement countries support fellows during trainings and throughout the year. In addition, fellows have a range of professional and personal growth opportunities, including access to a rich professional network of advisors and mentors, personal and confidential support through our partner Rootwise Leadership, public engagement opportunities such as writing and speaking engagements, and more. Our investment in our community begins with the fellowship year and extends throughout our alumni’s careers.

Leadership Development Curriculum

The year begins with a two-week Training Institute followed by retreats throughout the year. Our curriculum integrates leadership and professional development with self-reflection and personal learning. We focus on building skills that are essential for effective and ethical leadership, such as human-centered design thinking, storytelling, systems thinking and strategic planning for social change. We foster attitudes like empathy, resilience and cultural humility. We take an iterative and partnership-oriented approach to our curriculum development, engaging our community members as collaborative partners in designing and facilitating our training program.
We continue our investment in fellows as alumni through frequent networking events, ongoing professional development opportunities and regular leadership summits hosted in East Africa, Southern Africa, and the United States.

Staff Support

We have staff in each of our placement countries who support fellows and alumni on a day-to-day basis. Staff support fellows at training workshops and through regular site visits and phone check-ins. Additionally, GHC contracts with Rootwise Leadership to provide one-on-one, confidential support for fellows, particularly in their efforts to develop deeper self-awareness, relational wisdom, and overall wellbeing. Rootwise Leadership facilitators are available throughout the fellowship to share confidential support.

Program Offerings

Our leadership development program offers rich and diverse opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Connect
An engaged and networked community can catalyze real change. The value of creating and growing community is prioritized from the start with fellows placed in cross-cultural co-fellow pairs, situated within country cohorts and a broader fellowship class. GHC connects fellows with each other and to our alumni and professional community through a variety of activities.
  • Community engagement activities
  • Community-building and networking
  • Online communication platforms
  • Recruiting and selecting the next class of fellows
  • Alumni chapter activities around the world
Reflect
Everyone in the GHC community is connected to our work through a sense of purpose. In order to thrive, we must look inward and develop a deeper awareness of self and others. Our reflection offerings help our community make meaning of the world and build the resiliency needed throughout their careers.
  • Discernment and reflection opportunities at retreats
  • One-on-one support through Rootwise Leadership
Amplify
The ability to inspire and mobilize others – one of GHC’s core leadership practices – is critical to bringing in the right actors to the fight for health equity. Our programming trains fellows and alumni to use and amplify their voice through writing, public speaking, strategic communications, and narrative storytelling.

  • Public engagement activities (e.g. speaking events, op-ed publication, and recruitment activities)
  • Writing for our Medium publication, AMPLIFY
  • Advocacy trainings
Lead
Growth in leadership is at the heart of everything we do. Our programming builds results-oriented and committed leaders who live out our leadership practices in their personal and professional lives.
